Energy-efficient timber framed home in Cambridgeshire

Designed by architect Alison Mottram, this stylish timber-framed home in rural Cambridgeshire is packed full of renewable technology features along with seven sets of SUNFLEX UK SVG30 aluminium sliding doors.

The doors, ranging from twin-panel sets to a large four-panel set in the master bedroom, all feature on the homes’ south-facing elevation and provide stunning views over the unspoilt meadow that sits between the house and the village church. The doors were installed by SUNFLEX UK distributor Park Farm Design following a detailed technical discussion about the requirements for the build.

The house sits on a green-field site that had previously never been built upon. Alison was approached by the owner of the plot to advise on achieving full planning permission, in order to maximise the value of the plot. Alison could instantly see the potential for the site and fell in love with the village location, so much so that along with husband Phil they immediately put in an offer which was accepted.

With the plot secured Alison then spent time creating the design for the house, saying “Open plan spaces are what modern living is all about and we knew we wanted to maximise the amount of glass, not only to make the most of the views but also to fill the open plan spaces full of light. Having had bifold doors in our previous home we made the decision to go with sliding doors this time because their panel widths and narrow frames were the perfect solution.”

The finished build is a 4-bedroom, split-level timber and zinc clad structure with a tapered flat roof that features solar panels. On the south elevation, the upper floor extends over the ground floor creating an overhang that is repeated by the roofline. This design not only creates a balcony for the master bedroom, it also provides protection for the ground floor by reducing the solar gain during the hottest parts of the year.
