Perched above the sweeping sands of Sennen Cove at the very tip of Cornwall, Myrio is a striking new-build home designed around light, views and long-term performance. Built into a steep granite hillside with panoramic views across one of the county’s most iconic surf beaches, the project demonstrates how careful design and meticulous attention to detail can completely transform a challenging site.

When the owners purchased the original mid-century property in 2017, it was barely habitable, but the views were extraordinary. The brief to Hurditch Architecture was clear – create a light-filled contemporary home that fully embraced its elevated position and uninterrupted coastal outlook. The site’s steep granite slope demanded significant engineering. Anchored directly into bedrock, the new structure is partially set into the hillside and cantilevers outward towards Whitesand Bay and the Atlantic beyond, ensuring uninterrupted views from the living spaces.
Set into the hillside with all the glazing on the predominantly north-west facing elevation the key was not only to make the most of the location views but also to maximise the amount natural light. Through Devonshire Windows, SUNFLEX UK glazing systems play a pivotal role in achieving this balance, connecting inside and out, and framing the ever-changing coastal scenery.
With the primary elevation facing north-west, maximising natural light while framing the dramatic coastal scenery was essential. Working with Devonshire Windows, SUNFLEX UK glazing systems play a pivotal role in achieving this balance, connecting inside and out while capturing the ever-changing seascape. Rather than treating glazing as a finishing detail, the architects approached it as a structural design tool. Internally, the dramatic cantilevered living space with its pitched roof appears to float towards the bay. A large picture window at its end frames the beach and ocean beyond, transforming the Atlantic into living artwork.
On the upper floor two sets of slim-framed SVG30 sliding doors connect the living space to the stunning terrace. The larger 4-panel, centre opening set provides the connection between the kitchen and living room, whilst a smaller 2-panel set provides the study with its own views out to sea. On the lower ground floor the master-bedroom gets its own set of doors as the SVG30 is designed in a stunning open-corner sliding door configuration to allow for panoramic views; whilst the remaining bedrooms feature a combination of sliding doors incorporating Juliet balconies, fixed frame windows and sliding windows.
Constructed over five years, the build required exceptional coordination and technical precision. Beyond the challenges posed by its exposed coastal location just a mile from Land’s End, the site team navigated restricted access, complex groundworks, hillside water management and demanding structural requirements. The home’s galvanised steel frame, heavily insulated timber infill and airtight construction achieve near-Passivhaus levels of performance. A mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system ensures year-round comfort and energy efficiency.
Myrio demonstrates how high-performance sliding doors and picture windows can shape and define contemporary coastal architecture. The result is a calm, minimal interior filled with light from every angle, a home where the landscape is not simply viewed, but becomes an integral part of daily living.
