Luxury Cornish holiday retreat overlooking the beach

Perched on the side of the cliff face overlooking Trevaunce Cove near St Agnes within Cornwall’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Barrels is a stunning luxury holiday cottage that has been lovingly transformed into a stylish getaway on the Cornish coast. The original stone miners’ cottages have been combined and extended to create a bright, modern space that sleeps 10 guests within 5 bedrooms and includes all the additions and little details that you would expect of a 5-star property.

The original cottage has been preserved and completely renovated and now connects to the new two-storey extension on the slope behind the cottage. The extension, designed in collaboration by ra studio and Ian Chalk Architects, has been considerately created to complement the stone cottage whilst allowing for a contemporary living area that maximises the views over the cove and out to sea.

The existing cottages have been converted into the bedroom wing, whilst a hidden connection built into the slope of the site connects the old and new parts of the structure. At ground floor level in the new part of the property the games room, cinema and gym occupy the newly constructed space.

At the centre of the first-floor level of the new addition is a large open-plan kitchen-diner which features a full height-glass roof inset into the timber clad roof, whilst the views over the cove are perfectly framed by a single panel SUNFLEX UK SVG30 sliding door that is integrated alongside a full-height, SEF65 glass-to-glass corner window. With the slender sightlines of the doors and no window corner frame, the glazing allows for almost uninterrupted panoramic views over the cliffs, along the coastline and out to sea.

The SVG30 door, installed by Devonshire Windows, SUNFLEX UK’s long-time distributor in the South-West; is designed with a completely flush floor detail to provide a seamless connection between the living space and the patio-terrace, complete with hot-tub. The flush floor detail on the SUNFLEX UK sliding doors is possible without reducing the protection the system offers from wind and rain, a crucial consideration in such an exposed location.
