Set within nine acres of picturesque grounds in the heart of the Essex countryside, this exceptional Grade II listed residence is rich in character and history. Dating back to the 1400s, the original timber-framed home has evolved over the centuries, with each custodian leaving their own distinctive mark on the property.
When the current owners acquired the property, they recognised not only its remarkable heritage but also the opportunity to sensitively renovate it for contemporary family life. Their vision was to honour the building’s architectural legacy while introducing thoughtful updates that would enhance comfort, functionality and flow — creating a home that seamlessly blends historic charm with modern living.

The new owners engaged Plater Claiborne Architects and the brief was to create a substantial open-plan living space that would complement the historic building without compromising its architectural integrity. The solution came in the form of a 3-part extension.
The first part was a link structure, replacing an old lean-to rear porch to create a boot room, bathroom and utility room. This is connected to the second element; a pitched roof open plan family room filled with natural light thanks to the glazing on both side elevations. The final part of the extension was two self-contained bedrooms, designed to match the pitch of the roof of the main house and creating a facility that will enable the house to become a lifetime home.
SUNFLEX UK distributor Red Glazing worked closely with Player Clairborne and main contractors Lexden Contracts to finalise the glazing package for the extension. At the heart of the new structures are four large sets of SUNFLEX SVG30 sliding doors, chosen for their slim sightlines, smooth operation, and ability to frame uninterrupted views across the grounds and the adjacent lake.
When fully open, the sliding doors provide a connection between the extension and the garden on one side, whilst on the other a deck has been built out to the lake and the doors offer a seamless connection to this brand-new outdoor space. When closed, the thermally efficient glazing ensures year-round comfort without compromising transparency.
The result is a bright, contemporary family hub with panoramic views, all set against the backdrop of mature trees and the lake. The new extension and SUNFLEX UK glazing maximise views across this remarkable setting, ensuring the landscape remains central to everyday living.
The remainder of the extension features fixed frame and SAF tilt & turn windows, while the accessible bedroom in the final part of the extension features French doors that connect the room to the courtyard garden.
“What the owners have achieved with the project is incredible, it isn’t just the extension the whole renovation of the existing house has been handled so carefully and the way the old house flows into the new spaces is really clever. Like everything the glazing specification was covered with huge attention to detail by the architects and owners and we were thrilled to be able to play a part in the finished project turned out”

The transformation demonstrates how modern architectural interventions can successfully exist within a listed heritage context. Over the centuries the owners of the house have added their own stamp to the property to meet their needs of how they’d use the house. The latest changes are just part of that journey and the considerate design shows that it is possible to save listed properties from falling into disrepair by carrying out sensitive and careful modernisation. The SUNFLEX UK SVG30 sliding doors are instrumental in achieving the enhancing light, openness and connection to the outdoors while preserving the character of an extraordinary historic home.
