Clever renovation creates modern family home

Designed by the award-winning Concept Eight Architects and with glazing by P&P Glass, this South West London property has been completely renovated and refurbished in to a modern, family orientated home.

The key to the design brief for the architects was the ability to maximise outdoor living in all weathers and all times of the day. The original period house featured small and compact rooms on the ground floor with little connection to the garden, so the design was developed to create a large open space that all of the family could enjoy and one that had a connection to the outdoors at its heart.

The end result is a contemporary social kitchen with family snug space connecting seamlessly to a covered outdoor living area which houses a new outdoor kitchen as well as space for seating and dining. Through a clever bit of design the outdoor kitchen appears as though it is an extension of indoors, with the work-surfaces seemingly continuing out through the fixed frame window.

Enclosing the outdoors space is a cedar-clad soffit with the structural steels exposed to form part of the overall design. To connect the interior and exterior a 3-panel set of SUNFLEX UK SVG83 aluminium sliding doors is incorporated including a completely flush floor finish that helps accentuate the inside-out design.

Combined with a substantial flat rooflight over the kitchen, the large glass panels of the sliding doors help draw light into both the extension and the rooms in the existing structure of the home, creating a bright and contemporary space that is usable all year around.
