When the owners of this 1930s home in South West London set about extending the property their goal was two-fold, firstly to create an open plan living space for their family to enjoy, and secondly to do it in a style that was in-keeping with the existing house.
Location: New Malden, Surrey
Product/s: SUNFLEX UK SVG30 sliding doors – two sets in RAL 7003 Moss Grey with Art Deco style horizontal bars
SUNFLEX UK Distributor: RED Glazing
Project Architect: Studio Bua
Working with RIBA Chartered Architects Studio Bua, the design called for a two-storey extension with a reconfigured roof to add two new bedrooms and a large single storey extension to the rear of the house to create the much-desired family space.
With the back of the house facing north the extension was designed with to maximise the amount of light and features two sets of SUNFLEX UK SVG30 aluminium sliding doors and a large aluminium window. To reflect the style of the 1930s build the doors are installed with horizontal bars to match the appearance of traditional steel doors, with the windows designed to match.
This combination of period style with modern aluminium thermal efficiency and security performance provides the best of both worlds. When the doors are closed the horizontal bars give the appearance of an Art Deco era steel glass screen, but when the panels slide back they create an ultra-modern connection between the home and garden.
The stunning parquet flooring and detailed brickwork add further Art Deco themes, whilst the frames of the doors were manufactured in a matt RAL 7003 Moss Grey colour to subtly contrast with the finishes of the house.
