A Georgian style bifold door solution for this Kent home

This project called for a rather unique solution to closely match the appearance of SUNFLEX’s aluminium bifold doors with the sash windows and overall Georgian style of this Kent home.

Location: Knockholt, Kent
Product/s: SUNFLEX aluminium bifold doors with Georgian glazing bars
SUNFLEX UK Distributor: YES Glazing Solutions

The challenge that faced experienced SUNFLEX distributor YES Glazing Solutions was to find a solution that allowed contemporary aluminium folding doors to match traditional mock-Georgian style of this large family home.

Where once bars through the glass were a necessity because single glazing did not carry enough strength to allow for large panes of glass, now the glazing bars in the modern double-glazed, Georgian style windows and doors of this home are purely decorative.

The renovation and remodelling of this home saw a single storey glazed extension added to the U-shaped property to create a contemporary dining room and family space. In order to provide a better connection between the house and the patio the owners were keen on SUNFLEX’s aluminium bifold doors, opting for a 6-panel centre opening set flanked on either side of the supporting posts by fixed frames windows.

With a centre opening set the middle pair of doors act like a set of French doors, allowing easy access to the garden without having to completely open up the panels. When the weather is warm enough in summer the full set of doors can be opened up by folding and sliding the 3-panels from the centre to each end of the aperture, creating the ideal space for entertaining.

The look was achieved by fitting Georgian glazing bars to the outside of the double glazed unit on each door and fixed frame window, with the frames of the doors colour matched to ensure a consistent appearance throughout.
