Modern extension to red brick Cheshire home

This 1930s red-brick home in Cheshire has been completely transformed by a double extension, linked together by a zinc-clad open plan kitchen complete with SVG20 sliding doors.

Like most properties of its age the house suffered from small, box-shaped rooms which not only were impractical from a living perspective, they also failed to take advantage of the views out over the trees and fields that the house benefitted from.

The solution was a 3-part extension. A two-storey addition was built on the side of the house to allow for a large master-bedroom suite to be designed above a family room. Both rooms feature two-panel sets of SVG20 doors which look out over the garden (with the bedroom even having its own private balcony surrounded by glass balustrades).

To the rear of the house a single-storey brick extension was added to create a self-contained bedroom and to connect the two new structures together a steel framed, flat roof extension was designed to create a stylish open-plan kitchen and living space, that is filled full of natural light and connects seamlessly to the patio thanks to a further two sets of SVG20 doors. Across the short side of the room a 2-panel set matches up with the design of the family room/master bedroom doors on the same elevation, whilst the larger set of doors create an almost continuous wall of glass.

On this elevation the doors are configured as a four-panel OXXO set, with a centre opening set of doors where a single panel slides behind a fixed frame at each end. When the doors are open there is a real connection between the extension and the garden, breaking down the boundaries between inside and out.
